What's the best place to stay in Vegas for not a lot of $$$?

I was thinking of the Golden Nugget or The Tropicana. Have you stayed at either of these places? What impression did they leave on you?

I would love to stay somewhere with a pool. Mandalay Bay, MGM, Wynn, the Palms, Caesar's Palace, Bellagio, and any other place that is out of my budget! What's the best place to stay in Vegas for not a lot of $$$?
Well the Golden Nugget is downtown which is the "old" Las Vegas. Very cramped but easy to get around since you don't have to walk far to get from casino to casino. Tropicanna is of the new Vegas. Cheaply priced because it is not a glamorous property but still ... better than many hotel you would stay in other cities around the country. The pool is one of the better ones but you must be aware that it is not a private pool. Visitors walk all around the area. It is cool to swim up to a blackjack table and sit in the water and play.

Stay away from Circus Circus unless you want to be around lots of screaming kids. The Sahara and Stratosphere give good prices too but their locations are a negative.

Trop would be my choice.
Well, you could stay at the Super 8 that is right next to the Ellis Island Casino on Koval and Harmon. It's one "big block" (about 1 mile) east of the Paris and Bally's casinos, so it's close to the strip. Their prices for rooms are very low but it's still a good national chain. Ellis Island is a brew-pub/casino with $1 micro-brew beers, cheap yet good food and kareoke every night after 9. I live in Vegas and it's one of my favorite places to eat. If you want to swim, there are several public pools in town. One is in Paradise Park just east of Eastern and just north of Tropicana. It's really nice. Unless you are planning on spending almost every day poolside, it would be much cheaper to stay at a place like Ellis Island and go to a public pool than to stay at a really fancy casino with a pool. You can use the money you'll save to gamble or go shopping or go out to a really nice dinner. What's the best place to stay in Vegas for not a lot of $$$?
I stayed at MGM and I really loved it, they have a great pool scene. I would check the current hotel promotions on http://www.vegas-hotels-online.com - you get there promotions from $49 per night for Excalibur, MGM and they also have great deals for other hotels.
If you want to stay on the strip, the Excalibur is also pretty cheap I think. Only problem is, everything else on the strip is crazy expensive! Old downtown (Fremont Street) is a lot cheaper and still really fun.
Try The Orlean's or Gold Coast. Slightly off the strip, but both hotels are very low priced compared to on the strip and both have shuttles to the strip. From the Gold Coast, you can walk across the street to The Palms or The Rio.

Have fun!
Most people looking to stay cheap and in the middle of the strip go to the Imperial Palace. The fancier hotels have lower room rates on weekdays if you can plan your visit that way.
On your first day in Vegas gamble everything and win. Then with all of your money buy Vegas. Yes buy the city of Vegas. but you'd have to play like a pro to get it. good luck with that....
They are both great. The Gold Nugget is the best of Fremont Street. The Tropicana is on the strip. They are two different types of mind set. But I think you would like them both.
Personally I am not a fan of the Tropicana, but you can get a GREAT rate on the Flamingo, MGM over at http://www.bestofvegas.com/hotels/Flamin鈥?/a>

Have fun!
I think Circus Circus is having a summer sale - $49/night
These places with the right codes are not out of your budget, for the record GN is lovely, nice rooms great pool but downtown, Trop is nice pool but not so nice rooms do not stay in a garden room they are terrible but the towers are ok. For my buck I would stay at Excalibur over Trop any day of the week and of course Trop has filed for Chapetr 11 protection !
