I have just dug up an area in the yard, and i want to plant vegetables and flowers together, I wanted to plant zucchini and golden nugget pumpkins and maybe some baby carrots and radishes, don't want to plant anything you have to tie up or stake, it's the side of the yard can be seen from the front, so pretty is good, what type of flowers would you reccommend that would suit the mood, some shade, think I have enough sun during summer anywayWhat vegetables/flowers to plant (tricky spot), not sure how much light I have each day?
For Flowers as we do not know what Zone you live in, go with some hardy plants that will supply you with a lot of flowers. Coneflowers, Rudbeckias, Phlox are a great combination, give you lots of cut flowers, attract bees to pollinate veggies as well as butterflies.
I suggest things that are very easy care and easy germinating.
Sunflowers and zinnias will get some height on it, and at least the sunflowers can be interplanted with the pumpkins and zuchini.
If you plant tomatoes at all be sure to plant marigolds, they will keep the nematodes away.
A great companion planting trick is to mix radishes/carrots and lettuce (just mix the seeds up) and plant them together in rows. The radishes come up very quickly and mark the row, the lettuces will be getting bigger after the radishes are harvested and the slow growing carrots will be wanting the room after the lettuce is ready.
Radishes keep away lots of bugs so plant plenty of them, if you let some of them go to seed they have simple, somewhat ragged but not completely ugly flowers. I don't like radishes but always plant lots of them through the seasons because of their beneficial effects relating to bug control. What vegetables/flowers to plant (tricky spot), not sure how much light I have each day?
If you have 5 hours of direct sun during the growing season...you can grow about anything you want. Everything you mentioned should work fine.
