Las Vegas fremont used to be THE place, when did that change?

Today everyone talkes about the strip with Mandalay Bay at one end and Stratosphere on the other. But Fremont with Golden Nugget used to be the focus area of the town some years ago. When and what made the Strip the main attraction?

Las Vegas fremont used to be THE place, when did that change?
I would say it began to change early 80's. Many people couldn't afford Ceasars Palace on the strip. There was Bally's, the Flamingo and MGM but when The Mirage opened in 89 that was the beginning of a brand new vegas.
It would be difficult to pinpoint an exact date, but, IMO, when Steve Wynn opened the Mirage(11/1989), he changed the face of Las Vegas forever.

I want to go with Jack's assessment on the change from Freemont Dist to the Las VEgas Blvd. ..... The DI was king in the day.
