It's only a few miles up Las Vegas Blvd, an easy drive if you have a car, but a bother if you have to take a taxi or the bus. I always take my car and would advise you to rent one if you're staying Downtown. Fremont Street itself is a party street every weekend, and in Vegas you can walk down the street with your drink. This is true whether you're Downtown or on the Strip.
