Going there with family over Christmas. The parents, who are paying, like it there. The rest of us are in our late twenties, early thirties. I know the Strip is more "hip," but has anyone younger stayed at the Nugget???Any thoughts on staying at the Golden Nugget in Vegas?
I have never stayed there but I have been there many times. The GN is in the downtown area of Las Vegas or Freemont (what I call it) - which is about a 15 min drive from all the hip clubs and lounges (The Strip - Ceasars, MGM, NY NY) or not even 10 min from Stratosphere which has 2 clubs, Polly Esthers and something else.
Freemont, to me is a cool place to hang out, drink, walk around, cheap gambling and Jillians (also has a club and bowling alley).
You can also take the bus - The Deuce from Freemont to the Strip, bus runs 24 hours and it costs about $2 each way or $5 for 24 hour pass, which is an awesome deal because you can use that during the day and then at night.
The GN has remodeled there pool area with a huge shark tank in the middle of the pool and you can swim around the pool and watch the sharks and fish from all angles and the MOST COOLEST thing is that there is a slide that you go slide down and THROUGH the tank, ofcourse you are protected by the glass (durr).
For the most part all of the hotels in vegas are essentially the same unless you're a "high roller"
The nugget is cool...a little piece of vegas history. Your best bet is to map your trip out before you go..figure out where you wanna go at night and then take cabs down to the strip. Its too far to walk and renting a car to drive in Vegas is like paying money to sit in traffic.
We usually just grab a cab to the Aladdin and then work our way up the strip...by the time we get to the bellagio or caesers we're all good.
J-Any thoughts on staying at the Golden Nugget in Vegas?
Even though it is not on the strip you can have on Freemont St. If you want to go to the strip take a taxi or catch the bus.
I've never stayed at the golden nugget yet, but ive been inside, its gorgoues! My husband and I (i'm 23, hes 24) love downtown, its so different from the strip. Id stay away from cabs if you can, they can get expensive. Take the duece bus... it costs 5 dollars for a 24 hour pass! You can catch it right across the street from Hennesseys (the giant beer pint lol)
The Nugget is the gem of Old Vegas ! It was recently renovated and there's even some crazy reality show surrounding its new young owners(??).
It's on Freemont Street which is a major tourist attraction and there are always "air shows" there.
It's also a quick cab drive to The Palms and The Strip.
They also have a $10 incentive to sign up for their players club at the Nugget.
I went to Vegas for the first time last year. I'm in my thirty's and I thought it was great. It was being remolded, but too me it had a cozy feel to it and the people get to know you etc. Besides it Vegas baby we were gone more than we saw the hotel anyway. Have a great time, I can't wait to go back.
recently renovated. they have the worst buffet in town. I was really disappointed with it. but nice rehab and you should have a nice time
The Golden Nugget is nice. You'll like it.
I just scheduled my third trip and it will be the first time for my husband for mid December. I have stayed on the strip both times and this time we decided to stay on Freemont Street and all my investigation pointed to the Golden Nugget as it is the nicest hotel on Freemont Street. We are very excited. The most fun I had on both previous trips was had downtown. You can still go to the strip and do all the strip stuff - just grab a cab. You will have a great time there and so will your parents. Be sure to hit the Mermaid Casino on Freemont Street - great fun! And - hello - someone else is paying! Rock on!
You will love downtown! I haven't stayed at the Golden Nugget but have been there. Downtown is a lot of fun, it is more laid back than the strip. The Fremont Experience is very entertaining. It's more than the light show. There are stages all along it and differenct acts perform.
If you want, take a taxi to the strip just to see it, but the next time I go to Vegas, I'll be staying downtown instead of the strip. The Mega properties are fun to see but are more and more "unfriendly"
When I stopped at the Nugget in October there were people of all ages around.
I have stayed at the G Nugget 3 times. All before the remodel. I loved it each time. You'll probly be booked in South tower but all the rooms are nice.
I hope you will be on Fremont on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night because they have 2 stages on Fremont with live bands.

I wouldn't recommend staying at the Fremont. I did once. Room was clean and I lucked out - they gave me a small suite. Other rooms are rumored to be very small.
These websites are about the GN.

Yes.
I'm 27 and stayed there once for Christmas to visit family. It's pretty nice. It's not as hip as the strip, but has great ammenities. I think it has the best food downtown and the spa is pretty nice. What I didn't like is that those older casinos downtown have lower ceilings so the second hand smoke is terrible (if you're a nonsmoker, do your gambling at the newer casinos on the strip--the ceilings are higher). I didn't like the pillows at the nugget and got a stiff neck-- wished I would've packed a down pillow. Overall, though, it's the nicest place downtown. You might want to invest in a bus pass so you can go to the strip. The only downfall about going to vegas during Christmas is that there aren't as many shows playing. You'd have to catch a weeknight show. Harrah's is a fun place to check out if you find yourself too old for the clubs and to young to for downtown. Hope this all helps. Have fun!
