I am currently in college studying elementary education. But for a year now I have been thinking about being a bartender, not for a career, just something to do on the side to make a little money. I was just wondering if that would be "acceptable" for a teacher? I wouldn't work in a club, maybe a restaurant or a place like Applebees.Would you be concerned if your child's elementary school teacher was a part-time bartender?
Ok - like everyone else I wouldn't be concerned. You are an adult you can do what you want. Also, there are no rules against this.
However, you need to be realistic about your time. Let's say you work the last shift (it seems you would have to pending the time you get out of school). This means you are working at least an hour past the close of the restaurant so that you can clean the bar and prep for the next day's shift. So you are talking about getting home around 10 - 11 at night. I know for myself it usually takes me about an hour to relax coming home from something. So, you are looking at an 11 - midnight bedtime.
Chances are you will start school at 8 (I know that's the time the elementary schools in my district start - the high school starts at 7:15). However, most contracts require you to be in about 15 -20 minutes before that. I know for myself I like to get in about a half hour early to make sure my photocopies and agenda are ready for the day. So, you are talking about getting approximately 6 hours or so of sleep. Some people can do that, you need to decide if you can.
I guess what I am trying to say is be aware of your time management and be realistic, especially your first year teaching. You will have your hands full already with unit planning, lesson planning, contacting parents, correcting work (yes, even at the elementary school level), dealing with first year illnesses (children carry lots of germies), etc.
Good luck!
Go for it. Its no ones business what you do to make ends meet outside of schools house. unless of course you were making porn, or selling drugs ;) but working in a bar is completely legal and if any parent had a problem with that, then that is their problem not yours. Would you be concerned if your child's elementary school teacher was a part-time bartender?
If you were a bartender in a bar. Yes I would be concerned. But a place like Apple-bee's I wouldn't really care. Apple-bee's is a restaurant not many people come to get drunk, maybe get a drink or two but I wouldn't be concerned.
No bother - I work in a school and 2 of our teaching assistants work in bars (pubs), and my friend recently qualified as a teacher and she works in a pub /restaurant on weekends, behind the bar.
Can't see it should be a problem, although I have some friends who work in very conservative areas of USA, and it would be a problem there. However if you are in a large town/cityor in UK, I don't think it should matter.
I can't see anything problematic about it at all. The first person I ever knew personally who did bartending (at a golf course restaurant) was an extremely conservative Catholic girl who did not herself drink.
As long as you don't wear revealing clothing (french waitress style), drink and drive, and work for a reputable business - it shouldn't be a problem.
I think it would be fine. I'm a bartender (also college age) and it's a great way to make money. Good luck.
No I wouldn't be offended. People have to make money, especially college students.
absolutely! With what they pay teachers everyone certainly will understand.
Nope, two of my student teachers were bouncers in bars. Two others were bartenders.
No, not unless she or he brought alcohol to school. I mean it's not like you are drinking it.
I wouldn't be offended.
All the best.
